Continuing the discussion of whether or not a chinchilla is a good pet for you, look at factors such as medical care. Exotic medicine is a relatively new and expensive field. Regardless of where you purchase your pet, you should always have an experienced and licensed veterinarian examine your new pet. The cost of this might seem less than that of a dog or cat at first, as chinchillas do not need regular vaccines. However this is a misconception. A visit to the vet is already more expensive since you have to find one that is experienced and comfortable dealing with exotic animals. Also since they are so much smaller and fragile they require different tools and handling to properly examine. Not all laboratories are able to run bloodwork on your little pal if he becomes ill. Specialized laboratories mean an increase in cost.
Behavioral Concerns
Another huge factor to consider in owning one of these spry guys is behavior. Attitude is everything and while chinchillas seem to generally be more tame and docile, there are certainly exceptions. The last thing you want is for you, or even a child, to get bit by one. Their little teeth are sharp and designed to chew wood down to nothing and break through the tough shells of nuts. If handled frequently when they are young, a domesticated chinchilla can be a real joy and quite entertaining. However there are certainly neglected and even abused ones that require extra care and love. If you are looking for a challenge, then pick up an older, neglected chinchilla.
Do You Have the Time?
The last factor to consider is time. As mentioned above, a neglected chinchilla will become aggressive towards his owner. Be prepared to spend several hours a week playing and socializing with your pet. Reward good behavior with treats. Chinchillas are very smart and will soon learn that if they just sit still while you pet them that they will get a treat. Some might even learn tricks! What better way to wake up than to see your little buddy standing on his hind legs jumping up and down awaiting a treat? One disadvantage to their vast intelligence is breaking loose from their cage. How would you feel if you were locked up all day and night? Nothing to do but ponder the way to get out of the cage. Indeed if you neglect to latch a cage securely they will notice and take advantage of your error!
Chinchillas as a Whole
All in all chinchillas are great pets. They make one of the best pets for children (if raised properly) and can be a loving addition to your home. As with all animals, commitment, proper care, and love are required to form a strong and lasting relationship. Chinchillas can live up to twenty years old if cared for properly; are you ready for that?
